2014/03/21 – Saturday 29-3 it is International open Hackerspaces day
Bitlair and DJO (De Jonge Onderzoekers) will also be open for visitors from 14:00 – 22:00

Just like the past three years, the hackerspace community will open their doors to the public, on Saturday the 29th of March 2014.
Designing 3D printed cookie cutters, making your own soap, milling furniture, from adjusting the colours of your living room lights to match the film you’re watching to checking how secure Whatsapp really is. It’s all possible in a hackerspace.
A hackerspace is an environment where creative, legal, technialc and other curious people join together to work, think about and talk over a wide variety of subjects. “Some of these projects are really practical, others are more “because we can”. What is always the same is our goal to gather knowledge, work together and share our knowledge” says Jildou, founder of the Frack hackerspace.
The members of many hackerspaces demonstrate this goal by inviting anyone curious to come by and see what’s possible. Hacking isn’t just what the media tells you it is.
“The hackerspaces like to supplement each other and work together where possible. This way we can learn from each others faults, increase our knowledge and will we be able to offer a wide variety of projects all around the country”, explains Dave Borghuis, the founder of Tkkrlab.
Next to building machines, members also work on projects to, for example, remotely open the front door of their space, or to adjust the temperature of multiple areas via the internet. There’s also a collaboration with a library to teach kids how to solder, there are privacy workshops on multiple locations and spaces work together with municipalities regarding security and open data.
The open day will be a colourful whole, with activities spread all through the country. Every hackerspace will have their own interpretation. An overview of activities and opening times can be found at http://hackerspaces.nl/ or on the website of the local space.
Everybody is welcome to come over. Doors will be opened from 10am and around 17 the dayprogram will come to an end. Some spaces are also open in the evening.
Registration is not nescesary, but it’s appreciated if the press will make mention of themself beforehand.

2015/02/27 – Op zaterdag 28 maart kan iedereen weer vrij binnenlopen in een hackerspace
Hackerspaces zijn locaties waar mensen met een technische creatieve instelling bijeenkomen om te werken aan projecten of om gezellig te keuvelen. Tijdens deze open dag is het mogelijk om te zien wat bijvoorbeeld hacken inhoudt en te zien wat er allemaal kan in een hackerspace.
Enkele voorbeelden van activiteiten zijn:

• Leren hoe websites, netwerken en andere computergestuurde systemen kwetsbaar kunnen zijn voor aanvallers en wat daaraan gedaan kan worden.
• Het programmeren van elektronica en microcontrollers zoals de Arduino en de microcomputer Raspberry Pi. Hackers kunnen je laten zien hoe deze ingezet kunnen worden voor het bouwen van CNC–frezen, lasersnijders, 3D-printers, domotica, klokken, pick&place machines en autonome robots.
• Het gebruik van 3D–printers om bijvoorbeeld een kaakprothese te ontwikkelen, sleutels na te maken vanaf een foto of een kapot onderdeel van een huishoudelijk apparaat te vervangen.
• Discussiëren over het gebruik van persoonsgegevens door bedrijven of de overheid en de invloeden hiervan op onze privacy en andere aspecten van de samenleving.
• Ook zijn er per hackerspace verschillende presentaties te zien van de individuele projecten die in deze hackerspace worden uitgevoerd.

Hackers vinden ethiek een belangrijk onderwerp, en onderscheiden zich van computercriminelen door een sterk gevoel voor ethisch handelen. Tijdens de open–hackerspaces–dag zal worden uitgelegd hoe hackers bijdragen aan een betere wereld door met een frisse blik naar de maatschappij, techniek en organisaties te kijken, en hoe zij hun kennis met de samenleving delen. Daarnaast zijn hackerspaces ook plekken waar mensen die gewoon mooie dingen maken welkom zijn en gemeenschappelijke ruimte, gereedschappen, gelijkgestemden en inspiratie kunnen vinden. In allerlei vormen: van figuurzagen en ambachtelijk smeden tot biohacking en moleculair koken.
Iedereen is welkom om een kijkje te komen nemen tijdens de open dag. Vanaf 14:00 uur ‘s middags zijn de deuren geopend en om 17:00 is het dagprogramma afgelopen. Sommige hackerspaces blijven ‘s avonds geopend.
Aanmelden is niet nodig, het wordt vaak wel op prijs gesteld als pers zich vooraf meldt. Bij sommige hackerspaces zal er gelegenheid zijn om ‘s avonds mee te eten, waarvoor aanmelding wel nodig is.

2015/11/25 – Bitlair has recently replaced its access control system
With this new system in place, Bitlair can now distribute keys for the hackerspace to all its participants. The cost for a key is 15 euro. The key will remain property of the participant.

Because of the increase of key holders Bitlair will see an increased usage of the hackerspace.

If you are a participant but haven’t received a key yet, please contact a board member in the hackerspace.
